Kano Dye Pits - GTCO FSHN WKND
The Kofar Mata dye pits in Kano were established in 1498, which makes them more than 500 years old, and they are still in use today. The craft passes from grandfather to grandson, and one of the dyers we met has been doing this work for 63 years. We filmed the whole process: cloth tied tightly with thread, soaked in pits of natural dye and potash, then untied to reveal the pattern. The finished fabric leaves Kano for Abuja, Lagos, Chad and Cameroon. Made for GTCO Fashion Weekend 2024.
